Stephen Colbert Confronts Theories That Trump Got Late Show Canceled
Stephen Colbert recently addressed speculation surrounding the cancellation of “The Late Show,” with some theories suggesting it may have been politically motivated. In a cover story with GQ, Colbert was questioned about the abrupt ending of his CBS show in July, shortly after he criticized parent company Paramount’s $16 million settlement with President Donald Trump on air. Paramount was also awaiting FCC approval for its merger with Skydance at the time.
While Paramount cited financial reasons for the cancellation, others, including Elizabeth Warren and Adam Schiff, suggested political motives. Warren even hinted at a potential connection between the cancellation and a deal between the president and the corporation. Trump himself celebrated the news on Truth Social, expressing his satisfaction with Colbert’s departure.
Colbert, however, maintained that he does not view the situation through a political lens. He acknowledged how others might interpret it that way, given the circumstances surrounding the cancellation. He emphasized that as a professional in show business, he sees it as the network’s decision, rather than a political maneuver.
Despite the speculation, Colbert asserted that his focus remains on his work and his relationship with CBS, which he described as positive and supportive. He expressed surprise at the sudden nature of the cancellation, but also gratitude for the partnership he has had with the network.
As Colbert’s show is set to end in May 2026, he reflected on the unexpected turn of events and reiterated his appreciation for the support he has received from CBS. Representatives for CBS and the White House did not immediately respond to inquiries regarding the matter.
