Jake Haro sentenced to 25 years to life for torturing, murdering son Emmanuel
Child abuser dad Jake Haro was sentenced to 25 years to life on Monday for torturing and murdering his defenseless 7-month-old son, Emmanuel — whose tiny body still has not been found.
Haro, who pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder charge in a Riverside County Superior Court in California last month, shook his head and wiped tears from his eyes as the judge read the sentences, according to a live stream from Channel 3 News.
The 32-year-old killer dad was also sentenced to an aggregate of 180 days plus six years and 8 months for separate charges of assault causing bodily harm to a child and filing a false report.
Haro’s son Emmanuel was reported missing in Cabazon, Calif., on Aug. 14 by his 41-year-old mom, who claimed she was attacked by Hispanic men who abducted their baby outside a sporting goods store in San Bernardino.
But investigators quickly realized that the Haros’ story had inconsistencies and didn’t add up. This led to the Haros’ home being searched and their subsequent arrest on Aug. 22.
Haro’s wife, Rebecca Haro, is also facing murder charges but has pleaded not guilty to the updated criminal complaint.
During the investigation, Jake allegedly confessed to a fake inmate that he killed Emmanuel and discarded the baby’s body in a trash can. He also admitted to accidentally smothering the boy while he was sleeping and burying his body.
The duo executed the crimes with planning, sophistication, and professionalism, taking advantage of their position as parents and preying on their vulnerable victim, their baby boy, according to the updated complaint.
Jake had a prior conviction for child abuse and was on probation when he killed Emmanuel. In the previous case, he brutally beat his 10-week-old daughter Carolina, leaving her disabled for life. Despite this, he received no prison time, only probation.
“He destroyed my whole family. My children. Everybody in my family are destroyed…He changed my daughter’s life,” Rebecca Haro’s mother, Mary Beushausen, said in a victim impact statement. She also criticized the judge who gave Haro probation for his previous abuse charge.
The sentencing of Jake Haro brings closure to a tragic case of child abuse and murder that has deeply affected the family and community. The justice system has ensured that he faces the consequences of his heinous actions, although the search for Emmanuel’s body continues.
