Russia looks to cosy up with China after Trump’s meeting with Xi
Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin arrived in Hangzhou on Monday for two-day talks with his Chinese counterpart, Li Qiang, in a bid to strengthen the alliance between Moscow and Beijing. The visit comes in the wake of U.S. President Donald Trump’s high-profile meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, which was described as “amazing” by Trump.
During the talks, the officials signed a range of agreements to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, energy, transport, agriculture, and space. Mishustin referred to Li Qiang as his “dear friend” and emphasized the strong relationship between Russia and China, stating that it is at its highest level in history despite obstacles and Western sanctions.
Li Qiang expressed China’s readiness to enhance cooperation with Russia, highlighting the strategic partnership between the two countries. China has been a crucial ally for Russia, especially during the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, where Beijing refrained from condemning Moscow’s actions.
The partnership between Russia and China has been instrumental in mitigating the impact of Western sanctions on Russia’s energy export market. The alliance was solidified with a “no limits” partnership signed by Presidents Putin and Xi just before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Kremlin has placed significant importance on the talks, evident in the delegation accompanying Mishustin to China. Top officials from various sectors including finance, agriculture, transport, economic development, trade, space, and nuclear energy are part of the delegation.
The timing of the visit is crucial, following Trump’s recent meeting with Xi, which resulted in a trade truce between the U.S. and China. Trump announced agreements on rare earth supplies and reduced tariffs on Chinese goods, signaling a potential easing of tensions between the two economic giants.
Russia’s response to the U.S.-China talks remains guarded, with Trump’s decision to cancel a meeting with President Putin adding to the strained relations between Moscow and Washington. Russian officials attributed the cancelation to Western media and “fake news,” highlighting the complexities in the geopolitical landscape.
Overall, the visit underscores the deepening ties between Russia and China, as both countries navigate complex international relations and seek to strengthen their strategic partnership in the face of global challenges.
