Zohran Mamdani’s options to NYC schools include Jamaal Bowman, Meisha Ross Porter
Jamaal Bowman, the former congressman who made headlines for pulling a fire alarm and managing a middle school without a principal’s license, is now vying to become the next schools chancellor in New York City. He is determined to lead a “revolution in our public schools,” as he expressed during a recent address to the Democratic Socialists of America’s NYC chapter.
Bowman, who has the support of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, is actively lobbying Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani for the position. Despite facing opposition from former Mayor Bill de Blasio, who questions his experience, Bowman is pushing hard to secure the role.
Having served as principal of the Bronx Cornerstone Academy for Social Action, Bowman faced scrutiny for operating a public school without a valid license for almost two years. He has also been a vocal supporter of the opt-out movement and has been involved in various controversies, including pulling a fire alarm in Congress and making controversial statements about 9/11 and Hamas.
In addition to Bowman, there are other candidates in the running for the position of schools chancellor. Current chancellor Melissa Aviles-Ramos is hoping to retain her position, citing her experience as a New York City public school mom. City Councilwoman Rita Joseph and former chancellor Meisha Ross Porter are also contenders for the role.
Meisha Ross Porter, the first black woman to serve as schools chancellor, is being pushed by de Blasio for reinstatement. However, she is also under consideration for the position of CEO of Chicago Public Schools. Kamar Samuels, appointed as superintendent of District 3, is another candidate, although his tenure has been criticized by some insiders.
As Mamdani prepares to make appointments over the next 50 days, the decision on who will lead the nation’s largest school system remains uncertain. With plummeting student enrollment and lackluster test scores, the next schools chancellor will face significant challenges in improving the city’s education system.
