Trump pardons trail runner who took prohibited detour as he ran up and down Wyoming’s Grand Teton in record time

President Trump made headlines on Monday when he pardoned Michelino Sunseri, a trail runner who found himself in hot water after taking a shortcut on a prohibited trail while attempting to break a record running up and down the tallest peak in the Teton Range of Wyoming.

Sunseri, a 33-year-old athlete, set a new record on September 2, 2024, by running up and down the 13,775-foot-tall Grand Teton peak in a remarkable 2 hours, 50 minutes, and 50 seconds. However, his moment of triumph was overshadowed by the fact that he used a shortcut on his way down to avoid casual hikers, which violated the rules of the national park due to concerns about erosion.

As a result, Sunseri was convicted of a misdemeanor in September for taking the frowned-upon cut-through. However, his luck changed when President Trump granted him clemency, much to the surprise of many. Sunseri took to Facebook to express his gratitude for the pardon, calling the whole ordeal a massive waste of taxpayer money and government energy.

Before his pardon, prosecutors had offered to dismiss his case if Sunseri completed 60 hours of community service and a course on wilderness stewardship. His legal defense was supported by the Pacific Legal Foundation, who saw the case as an opportunity to fight against what they deemed as unconstitutional regulations that could criminalize harmless conduct.

The pardon itself was seen as apolitical, coming just days after Trump pardoned 77 individuals connected to a plot to overturn the 2020 presidential election, including some of his political allies. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter.

Overall, Sunseri’s story serves as a reminder of the complexities of navigating rules and regulations in national parks, and the impact that presidential pardons can have on individual cases. It also highlights the importance of legal advocacy in challenging what are perceived as unfair or unjust regulations that could have far-reaching consequences for individuals.
