Japan says warplanes scrambled as Chinese drone detected near southern island close to Taiwan
Japan reported on Monday that it had sent aircraft to intercept a suspected Chinese drone near Yonaguni, a southern island close to Taiwan, as tensions between the two countries escalated. The incident occurred as Chinese coast guard vessels entered Japan’s territorial waters around the disputed Senkaku Islands on Sunday.
The recent spike in tension between Japan and China comes in response to remarks made by Japan’s new conservative leader, Prime Minister Senae Takaichi. Takaichi, known for her criticism of China and its military activities in the region, suggested that Japan could intervene militarily in the event of a hypothetical Chinese attack on Taiwan. These comments have angered Chinese officials, who consider Taiwan to be a part of their territory.
In light of Takaichi’s remarks, a Chinese diplomat stationed in Japan made threatening comments, leading to a diplomatic standoff between the two countries. Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te called on Beijing to show restraint and uphold peace and stability in the region.
The escalating tensions have also had economic repercussions, with Beijing advising its citizens to avoid traveling to Japan and warning Chinese students in the country of potential risks to their safety. This has led to a decline in Japanese tourism and retail shares, as China is a major source of tourists for Japan.
Furthermore, concerns have been raised about China potentially using its dominance in the supply chains of rare earth minerals to inflict economic damage on Japan’s electronics and automotive industries. The film industry in Japan has also been affected, with the suspension of two movies scheduled for release in China.
Despite efforts to ease tensions, including talks between senior diplomats from both countries, there seems to be no clear resolution in sight. Both Japan and China have issued warnings to their citizens and demanded retractions of statements made by the other country. The situation remains tense, with no apparent off-ramp available to de-escalate the feud.
