Ukraine says peace talks ‘will take place in the coming days’
Amid efforts to end Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, the Office of the President of Ukraine announced that consultations on steps to achieve peace will be held in the coming days. The President of Ukraine has approved the composition of the Ukrainian delegation and directives for the upcoming talks, with a focus on advancing towards a genuine peace as quickly as possible.
In a statement posted on social media, the President’s office emphasized Ukraine’s desire for a dignified peace and reiterated its commitment to not being an obstacle to peace. The Ukrainian delegation will work to defend the legitimate interests of the Ukrainian people and uphold the foundations of European security with the support of European partners.
Further discussions on a potential peace agreement are set to take place in Switzerland between high-ranking officials from Ukraine and the United States. This comes after the White House presented a new 28-point peace plan to Ukraine, which has been met with mixed reactions due to some of the conditions that are perceived as demanding Ukraine’s capitulation.
A delegation led by U.S. Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll and Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George visited Kyiv to discuss the peace plan with Ukrainian officials. The plan, described as a collaborative effort between the U.S. and Ukraine, includes provisions that have been previously rejected by Kyiv, such as reducing Ukraine’s armed forces and ceding territory to Russia.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reiterated the country’s commitment to achieving a lasting peace, emphasizing the need for a solution that will not be undermined by further aggression. Discussions between the U.S. and Ukraine are ongoing, with both parties working towards a comprehensive plan to end the war and restore stability in the region.
The proposed peace plan also addresses the possession of long-range weapons and the status of Crimea, with Moscow expected to retain occupied territory and potentially receive recognition for its annexation of Crimea in 2014. These negotiations mark a crucial step towards resolving the conflict and establishing a sustainable peace in Ukraine.
In conclusion, the collaborative efforts between Ukraine, the United States, and European partners reflect a shared commitment to ending the war and promoting stability in the region. The upcoming consultations will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Ukraine and advancing towards a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.
