Before floating challenge to Trump’s Florida governor pick, James Fishback sought Fed role, investments from Trump world

In August, as President Donald Trump’s relationship with the Federal Reserve grew strained, key Trump advisers found themselves bombarded with calls and messages from an unexpected source. James Fishback, a 30-year-old CEO of an investment firm, was pushing to be appointed to the Federal Reserve Board of Governors, a highly influential economic position in the government. Fishback, a political newcomer, positioned himself as a staunch supporter of the president who could serve as Trump’s “bulldog” on the board.

Fishback reached out to White House deputy chief of staff James Blair and other influential Trump advisers, pitching himself for the role. He even contacted President Trump directly to make his case. Fishback lobbied persistently for the position, touting his loyalty to Trump and promising to support significant interest rate cuts. However, despite his efforts, Fishback was never seriously considered for the position, and Trump ultimately appointed Stephen Miran to the role.

Now, months after his failed bid for the Fed position, Fishback is setting his sights on a different target: Rep. Byron Donalds, Trump’s endorsed candidate for Florida governor. Fishback is gearing up to launch a campaign against Donalds, with plans to make an announcement soon. In recent weeks, Fishback has launched a series of attacks on Donalds, even taking shots at President Trump and engaging in social media disputes with former Trump advisers.

When asked if his unsuccessful Fed bid influenced his decision to run for governor, Fishback denied any connection. He insisted that he simply believes Donalds would be a subpar governor and that Floridians deserve better. Fishback’s potential entry into the gubernatorial race adds a new twist to an already intriguing Republican primary, where Trump has endorsed Donalds, and Gov. Ron DeSantis is still searching for a successor.

Fishback’s journey from seeking a Fed Board seat to eyeing the Florida governor’s mansion has raised eyebrows in the MAGA world. Some have questioned his credentials and motivations, with one Trump adviser describing him as a mysterious figure. Despite facing criticism and skepticism, Fishback remains undeterred in his quest to challenge Donalds and shake up the political landscape in Florida.

As Fishback prepares to enter the gubernatorial race, his past actions and controversies are likely to come under scrutiny. From his questionable claims of advising Elon Musk’s “DOGE movement” to allegations of misrepresenting his role at his former employer, Fishback’s path to political prominence has been marred by controversy. However, he remains determined to carve out a place for himself in Florida politics and offer voters an alternative to the status quo.
