Gas prices dip below $3 a gallon, the lowest since 2021
Gas prices in the United States have hit a four-year low, providing relief for drivers across the country. According to data from GasBuddy, the average price of a gallon of gas is now $2.95, marking a significant decrease of 8.5 cents from the previous week and 5.4 cents lower than a year ago. This is the lowest price at the pump since May 2021.
AAA data shows that the national average price for a gallon of gas is slightly higher at $2.99. The decrease in gas prices can be attributed to strong refinery output, lower crude oil prices, and softer seasonal fuel demand. The U.S. has seen strong domestic supplies of crude oil, with record production levels of nearly 14 million barrels a day as of September.
The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has also increased oil production this year, contributing to the decline in fuel prices. Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, believes that the drop in gas prices indicates a stabilization of the U.S. economy following the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
While the dip in gas prices below $3 may bring some relief to consumers, De Haan emphasizes that these fluctuations are normal and prices are likely to increase again in the spring. GasBuddy reports that average prices have fallen in all 50 states, with significant declines in states like Ohio, Michigan, New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas.
In Michigan, drivers are now paying an average of $2.96 per gallon, five cents lower than the previous month. Some states, such as Oklahoma, Colorado, and Texas, are seeing gas prices below $2 per gallon. Diesel prices, however, remain higher at $3.72 per gallon, despite a 5.5 cent decrease in the last week.
GasBuddy gathered data from over 12 million price reports at more than 150,000 gas stations nationwide to analyze the trend. While the current drop in gas prices may provide temporary relief for consumers, it is important to note that prices are expected to rise again in the coming months.
