2 Colorado clothing stores ranked among best in country by NYT
Two Colorado clothing stores are gaining national recognition for their unique offerings, landing a coveted spot on the New York Times’ list of the 50 best clothing stores in America.
New York Times reporter Steven Kurutz described the experience of entering a great clothing store as akin to taking a vacation, where customers are transported to a different world and may even undergo a change in perspective. Most of the stores featured on Kurutz’s list were independent small businesses, ranging from a skate shop in Arizona to a Milanese tailoring business in Georgia.
Among the 50 stores highlighted, two Colorado establishments stood out: Montbell in Boulder, the Japanese equivalent of Patagonia founded by Isamu Tatsuno, and Gorsuch’s flagship store in Vail, known for its European skiwear collection.
Montbell’s Boulder location is the brand’s sole store in the U.S., offering a range of unique products such as fleece tabi slippers, down pants, ripstop tote bags, and outdoor hats. The store also features camping gear like tents, glow-in-the-dark zipper pulls, camping chopsticks, and watercolor painting sets.
Over in Vail, Gorsuch’s inventory includes a variety of winter essentials like sweaters, winter jackets, and baseball caps, evoking a sense of being in the Alps. The family-run business also offers ski rentals at its locations in Colorado and Utah.
