‘Little Disasters’ Review: Diane Kruger Thriller Disappoints
Paramount+ has recently released the limited series “Little Disasters,” which may remind viewers of the successful Peacock series “All Her Fault.” Both shows share similar story beats and influences, focusing on affluent mothers grappling with anxiety and the safety of their children. “Little Disasters,” based on Sarah Vaughan’s novel, follows the story of Jess (played by Diane Kruger), who brings her daughter to the emergency room with a mysterious injury, leading to a spiral of paranoia and tension among her friend group.
The series, adapted by Ruth Fowler and Amanda Duke, incorporates a unique framing device where characters speak directly to the camera, reminiscent of “Big Little Lies.” The tension between Jess, a vaccine skeptic, and her doctor friend Liz (played by Jo Joyner) adds an intriguing layer to the narrative. However, the resolution of the mystery in the final episodes may leave some viewers wanting more.
The core relationships within the show’s group of friends, including high-powered attorney Charlotte (Shelley Conn) and free-spirited Mel (Emily Taaffe), offer a glimpse into the complexities of motherhood and friendship. As tensions rise and secrets are revealed, the dynamics among the women shift, highlighting the challenges of balancing work, family, and personal aspirations.
One of the most compelling aspects of “Little Disasters” is the exploration of healthcare attitudes, with Jess’s preference for private healthcare contrasting Liz’s reliance on the NHS. This subplot adds depth to the characters and raises questions about privilege and trust in the medical system. However, the series ultimately leans towards melodrama in its storytelling, prioritizing shock value over emotional depth.
Despite its familiar themes and plot twists, “Little Disasters” manages to captivate viewers with its engaging performances and tight pacing. While it may not break new ground in the genre of mom thrillers, it offers a compelling look at the bonds of friendship and the complexities of modern motherhood. All six episodes of “Little Disasters” are now available for streaming on Paramount+, inviting audiences to delve into the world of these flawed and relatable characters.
