New quarters feature pilgrims, not civil rights

The U.S. Mint recently unveiled special quarter-dollar coin designs in honor of the upcoming 250th birthday of the United States. This milestone event will feature unique designs depicting pilgrims and former presidents, deviating from previously considered civil rights themes.

Initially, designs featuring abolitionist Frederick Douglass, suffragettes, and civil rights icon Ruby Bridges were under consideration. However, the final five designs selected for the commemorative quarter spotlight different aspects of American history. These include images of Pilgrims and the Mayflower, George Washington and the Revolutionary War, Thomas Jefferson and the Liberty Bell, James Madison and Independence Hall, and Abraham Lincoln with a quote from the Gettysburg Address.

Acting Mint Director Kristie McNally expressed that these chosen designs aim to showcase America’s journey towards a ‘more perfect union’ and celebrate the nation’s fundamental principles of liberty. The Mint hopes that these coins will allow every American to hold a piece of the country’s rich 250-year history in their hands.

This announcement comes amidst significant changes in U.S. coinage. The Mint ceased production of the penny in November, citing rising production costs and a decrease in cash usage due to the prevalence of electronic payment methods. Additionally, there have been talks of minting a $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump on both sides for the 250th anniversary. However, the final design for this coin has yet to be determined, with three potential designs featuring Trump currently in consideration.

Overall, the unveiling of these special quarter designs marks a significant moment in American numismatic history. As the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, these coins will serve as a tangible reminder of the country’s enduring values and remarkable journey.
