Barry Biffle out as CEO of Frontier Airlines

Frontier Group Holdings Inc., the parent company of Denver-based Frontier Airlines, made an announcement on Monday that CEO Barry Biffle has stepped down with immediate effect.

James G. Dempsey, the company’s president, has been appointed as interim CEO while the board searches for a new leader. Biffle will continue to serve as an adviser until the end of the year.

Board Chairman Bill Franke praised Dempsey, stating, “Jimmy has been an invaluable member of Frontier’s senior leadership team for more than 10 years and is well-equipped to guide our airline into the future.”

Biffle, who joined the airline in 2014 and became CEO in 2016, was tasked with transforming Frontier into an ultra-low-cost carrier by its owners at the time, Indigo Partners. Under his leadership, the airline expanded its route network, introduced a loyalty program, and placed a large order for fuel-efficient aircraft.

Despite facing challenges during the pandemic, Frontier struggled to maintain profits in recent years. The company’s stock performance and operating margins have declined, leading to Biffle’s departure.

Dempsey, who has a background in finance, is expected to bring a focus on financial discipline to the company. With CEO departures being common at the end of the year, Biffle’s resignation aligns with this trend.
