Exclusive | Washington Square Park crime fell 65% since NYPD 24/7 crackdown on dealers, junkies
Crime rates in Washington Square Park have seen a significant decline of 65% since the NYPD initiated a 24/7 crackdown targeting dealers, junkies, and lawbreakers. Data provided exclusively to The Post revealed that there were only 16 reported crimes at the park from November 1 to the present, compared to 46 during the same period the previous year.
Major crimes such as assaults and robberies saw an even steeper decrease of 89%, with only two incidents reported since the NYPD intensified their presence in the area. This marks a significant improvement compared to the 19 reported cases during the same timeframe in 2024. Notably, there have been no major crimes reported at the park since November 19.
The most notable reduction was in grand larcenies, which saw a staggering 92% drop. This decline in criminal activity has been attributed to the increased police presence at the park.
Residents living near Washington Square Park have noticed a positive change in the atmosphere. Christine Economos, the president of the NYPD’s Sixth Precinct Community Council, commended the efforts of law enforcement in “cleaning up” the park. She mentioned that drug activity and homelessness have significantly decreased, allowing the park to return to its former state.
Since October 31, the NYPD has deployed 68 police officers to patrol the park round-the-clock on foot. This strategic decision has resulted in a drastic reduction in crime rates and an overall improvement in the safety and security of the area.
Mayor Eric Adams, who has been vocal about his commitment to public safety, praised the park crackdown as a successful initiative in enhancing the quality of life for New Yorkers. He emphasized the importance of proactive policing in maintaining a safe environment for all residents.
The recent data underscores the effectiveness of increased police presence in combating crime and improving public safety. As the city continues to prioritize law enforcement efforts, Washington Square Park serves as a prime example of the positive impact that targeted interventions can have on reducing criminal activity and promoting community well-being.
