Chevy Chase Was in Coma for 8 Days After Heart Failure in 2021
Documentary Reveals Chevy Chase’s Near-Death Experience and Recovery
A new documentary has shed light on a harrowing experience that comedy legend Chevy Chase went through during the pandemic. In 2021, the 82-year-old actor was hospitalized for five weeks due to undisclosed heart issues, which ultimately led to heart failure and a coma lasting around eight days.
According to Chase’s daughter, Caley Chase, in the documentary titled “I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not,” premiering on CNN, her father “has basically come back from the dead” after experiencing heart failure. His wife, Jayni Chase, revealed that during the years of heavy drinking, Chevy developed cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart muscles weaken, leading to difficulties in pumping blood effectively.
Cardiomyopathy is a serious chronic disease that can progress to heart failure and other complications.
After Chevy’s heart stopped, doctors made the decision to induce a coma to give his body a chance to recover. His friend, Peter Aaron, described the ordeal as “pretty rough on the body.”
When Chevy woke up from the coma, he initially struggled with cognitive impairments and had difficulty speaking. It took time for him to reorient himself and regain his mental faculties through activities like playing cards and chess.
Despite the challenges he faced, Chevy expressed gratitude for being back with his family and feeling good after the hospitalization. He acknowledged that the heart issue had affected his memory, causing gaps in his recollection of past events.
In the documentary, Chevy admitted to struggling with memory loss and not being able to recall certain incidents from his career, including conflicts on the sets of “Saturday Night Live” and “Community.”
When discussing his exclusion from the “SNL” 50th anniversary special, Chevy revealed feeling hurt and bewildered by the decision. He expressed disappointment at not being invited to participate in the event alongside his former castmates.
Despite the challenges he has faced, Chevy Chase remains resilient and optimistic about his recovery. The documentary provides a glimpse into the comedian’s journey of overcoming adversity and regaining his health.
