Ex-Obama Adviser Predicts This Trump Obsession Will Be A ‘Big Political Problem’ For GOP

David Axelrod, a former senior adviser to Barack Obama during his presidency, connected President Donald Trump’s grievances about renovations at the Federal Reserve to a potential “major political problem” that the GOP may encounter in the upcoming midterms.

Axelrod criticized the president’s fixation on issues like the Federal Reserve renovations, citing Trump’s recent threat to sue Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell for “gross incompetence” regarding the renovations. Axelrod described Trump’s preoccupation with such matters as an “obsession.”

He highlighted how Trump took to social media last week to showcase marble armrests for seating at the newly Trump-branded Kennedy Center, leaving people questioning the relevance of such actions to their everyday lives.

“People are asking themselves, ‘How does this benefit me? I thought he was going to focus on reducing my expenses?'” Axelrod remarked.

Axelrod also pointed out Trump’s tendency to emphasize his name and gold elements in various renovations, like the marbleized floor in the White House’s Palm Room earlier this year.

“He appears fixated on gold, branding, and reconstructing buildings and monuments that glorify himself,” Axelrod commented.

Axelrod likened the president’s behavior to a “Marie Antoinette thing.”

“This poses a significant political challenge, not just for him but also for Republicans who should be alarmed by what they are witnessing,” he added.

Since taking office, Trump has adorned the Oval Office with gold, transformed the Rose Garden into a patio, razed the East Wing to make way for a planned ballroom (expected to bear his name), inserted subtle jabs at his adversaries in a politically charged “Presidential Walk of Fame” along the West Wing colonnade, and erected large flagpoles at the White House.

Trump’s name has also been affixed to the facade of the U.S. Institute of Peace building, a federal website promoting prescription drugs, an investment initiative, a $1 million “gold card” pathway to U.S. citizenship, and a planned “Trump Class” of so-called “battleships.”

In October, the U.S. Treasury unveiled plans to mint a coin featuring Trump’s likeness on both sides in 2026, although some legal experts suggest that such a move could be unlawful.
