Exclusive | ‘I think I’m going to die today,’ said NYPD cop before chase

Retired NYPD Detective Randy Jurgensen had a storied career in law enforcement, busting cop killers, drug dealers, and street corner goons. But in his reel life, he also made a name for himself in Hollywood, working on over 40 films and television shows. From playing a cop in “The French Connection” to a wiseguy in “Donnie Brasco” and a killer in “The Godfather,” Jurgensen’s talents extended beyond the streets of New York City.

It all began in the 1960s when his friend, NYPD Detective Sonny Grosso, introduced him to “French Connection” director William Friedkin. Friedkin wanted Jurgensen to help train actors Gene Hackman and Roy Scheider to portray detectives realistically in the film based on a true story about a major heroin bust. Jurgensen’s expertise as a former narcotics detective was invaluable in preparing the actors for their roles.

One of the most memorable moments in Jurgensen’s Hollywood career was during the filming of the iconic chase scene in “The French Connection.” He rode in the passenger seat of a Pontiac LeMans, operating a camera attached to the front bumper as the car raced through the streets of Brooklyn. The thrilling stunt left Jurgensen feeling like he was risking his life, but it ultimately resulted in one of the most famous scenes in cinematic history.

Throughout his time in Hollywood, Jurgensen developed close friendships with actors like Gene Hackman, who he worked with on multiple projects. Their camaraderie extended beyond the set, with inside jokes and shared memories that lasted a lifetime.

Despite his success in Hollywood, Jurgensen never forgot the real-life cases that had a profound impact on him. One such case was the murder of Police Officer Phillip Cardillo, who was killed in a racially charged incident at a Nation of Islam mosque in Harlem. Jurgensen took on the case as the lead investigator but faced obstacles from city leaders and a lack of support from the NYPD.

Despite the challenges, Jurgensen’s dedication to justice never wavered. He continued to pursue leads and work tirelessly to bring criminals to justice, even when faced with adversity. His commitment to upholding the law and seeking justice for victims drove him to make a documentary called “Reel Cop” with his son-in-law, highlighting his unique experiences as a law enforcement officer and Hollywood consultant.

From his early days on the streets of New York City to his adventures in Hollywood, Randy Jurgensen’s legacy as a dedicated detective and influential figure in the entertainment industry will continue to inspire generations to come.
