Trump offers first timeline for US oil company operations in Venezuela

President Trump made a bold prediction on Monday, stating that American oil companies could have a significant presence in Venezuela within the next 18 months. In an interview with NBC News, Trump emphasized that this process could potentially be expedited with a substantial financial investment from the oil companies. He mentioned that the companies would be reimbursed either directly or through revenue generated from their operations in Venezuela.

Following a recent successful US military operation to capture Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, Trump asserted that American companies would focus on the oil sector in the South American nation. He highlighted the need to first rebuild Venezuela’s crumbling infrastructure before tapping into its abundant oil reserves.

Currently, Chevron stands as the only major US oil company operating in Venezuela, as ConocoPhillips and Exxon Mobil withdrew from the country nearly two decades ago when Hugo Chávez, Maduro’s predecessor, nationalized their assets.

Trump acknowledged the significant financial commitment required by oil companies to invest in Venezuela but expressed confidence in their ability to thrive in the region. He emphasized that the country would also benefit from this partnership.

The president argued that expanding drilling operations in Venezuela would contribute to reducing oil prices globally, emphasizing the positive impact on the United States’ economy.

While the Trump administration did not provide advance notice to American oil companies regarding the military operation in Venezuela, discussions had been ongoing about the potential for such actions. Energy Secretary Chris Wright is scheduled to meet with executives from Exxon and ConocoPhillips to discuss opportunities in the Venezuelan oil sector.

Wright has been assigned the task of leading the administration’s efforts to revive Venezuela’s oil infrastructure, signaling a potential shift in the country’s oil production landscape. The administration aims to leverage the expertise and resources of American oil companies to facilitate the rejuvenation of Venezuela’s oil industry.
