Reeves doesn’t rule out more support for hospitality sector
The Chancellor of the Exchequer has recently hinted at the possibility of extending support for hospitality businesses affected by the impending rise in business rates. While she has already promised assistance for pub owners, there are calls for additional help to be provided to other establishments within the hospitality sector.
Last week, reports surfaced that the Treasury was preparing to announce further aid specifically tailored for pubs, as they face the end of Covid-era business rates relief in April. This relief will coincide with substantial increases in the rateable value of their properties, putting additional financial strain on these businesses.
Although initial indications suggested that the Chancellor was hesitant to offer more support beyond pubs, she later stated that she is actively collaborating with the hospitality sector. Treasury officials have indicated that a package aimed at assisting pubs will be unveiled in the near future, with the possibility of extending relief to other businesses in the industry.
Opposition MPs and industry organizations have been advocating for a comprehensive support package that encompasses hotels, restaurants, and other hospitality establishments. Rachel Reeves emphasized the importance of providing balanced support to ensure the sustainability of the sector as transitional relief phases out.
The proposed £4.3 billion allocation over the next three years aims to mitigate the impact of rate rises for pubs and hotels. Kate Nicholls from Hospitality UK welcomed the Chancellor’s openness to considering support for a broader range of hospitality businesses facing significant rate hikes.
While Reeves acknowledged the challenges faced by pubs, she also highlighted the concerns of smaller hospitality businesses such as cafes that may not pay business rates due to their size. With the looming end of Covid-era relief and revaluation of properties, many businesses are bracing themselves for financial difficulties ahead.
The hospitality sector is eagerly awaiting further details on the support package and remains hopeful that additional assistance will be extended to all businesses facing steep rate increases. As the government navigates the complexities of post-pandemic recovery, ensuring the survival of these vital establishments is crucial for the overall health of the economy.
