Texas dad, Jonathan Ross Mata, fatally shoots Amazon manager Desmond Butler after mistaking him for daughter’s kidnapper

On Christmas Day, a tragic case of mistaken identity led to the death of 25-year-old Desmond Butler at a Shell gas station in Houston. Jonathan Ross Mata, a Texas father, mistakenly believed that Butler was his daughter’s kidnapper and opened fire on him, ultimately causing his death.

The events unfolded when Mata and his wife received a distressing call from their 19-year-old daughter, claiming she had been attacked by her boyfriend. Thinking she would be dropped off at the gas station by her boyfriend, Mata and his wife rushed to the scene. As a vehicle resembling the boyfriend’s pulled into the lot, Mata’s wife ran after it, believing their daughter was inside.

Surveillance footage captured the moment when Butler, driving a gray Honda Pilot, passed Mata’s vehicle at the pump. Mata’s wife attempted to reach the rear passenger door of the Honda, causing Butler to accelerate out of the parking lot. Unaware of the situation, Butler continued driving onto an access road, where Mata followed on foot with a pistol in hand.

Mata fired shots at the Honda, hitting Butler and causing him to crash into a pole. Realizing their mistake, Mata and his wife approached the crashed vehicle, only to discover that Butler was not their daughter’s boyfriend. Despite this realization, they left the scene without calling for help.

Butler was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries. Mata later turned himself in, claiming he thought he was intervening in a kidnapping. He has been charged with murder and posted bail, awaiting his court appearance.

Desmond Butler, originally from Georgia, had moved to Houston to work at Amazon and had no plans on Christmas Day. His family, devastated by his untimely death, described him as a “light of joy” and are seeking answers for why he was targeted in this tragic case of mistaken identity.
