Microsoft investigating outage affecting Microsoft 365, Outlook and other services
Microsoft 365 Services Experience Outages Impacting Thousands of Users
Reports are flooding in from Microsoft customers experiencing difficulties accessing various Microsoft 365 services, including the popular email platform Outlook, Teams, and other essential tools. The issues began surfacing on Thursday afternoon, with users encountering problems accessing Microsoft applications, as indicated by the spike in complaints on Downdetector, a website that tracks online service outages. Around 16,000 individuals reported difficulties with Microsoft 365 around 3 p.m. EST.
Microsoft promptly acknowledged the problem on its official website, stating that users may experience degraded service functionality or complete inability to access multiple Microsoft 365 services. By 4:14 p.m. EST, Microsoft declared that the affected infrastructure had been restored to a stable state, although efforts were ongoing to rebalance traffic across all impacted systems to ensure a seamless user experience.
Despite Microsoft’s efforts, some users continued to encounter issues with accessing Microsoft 365 tools well into Thursday evening. Frustrations were evident on social media platforms, with one user expressing their dissatisfaction about being unable to send emails even after the supposed fix.
There were calls from affected users for Microsoft to provide compensation for the service outage, citing disruptions to their work operations. Comparisons were drawn to a recent incident where Verizon offered affected customers a $20 credit following a significant service outage that hindered wireless device usage.
Microsoft has yet to provide a detailed explanation for the cause of the service disruption, leaving users speculating about the root issue. This incident echoes a past event in 2024, where a faulty update of CrowdStrike antivirus software resulted in widespread outages for Microsoft 365 users, impacting various industries and causing significant disruptions.
