‘SNL’ Slams ICE During ‘Weekend Update’ After I.C.U. Nurse’s Death
Saturday Night Live Takes on ICE in Latest Episode
During the most recent episode of “Saturday Night Live,” the popular sketch comedy show took a lighthearted jab at ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) during their “Weekend Update” segment. This comes just hours after a tragic incident where a 37-year-old Minneapolis intensive care nurse was killed by Border Patrol agents.
One of the show’s hosts, Michael Che, humorously criticized Vice President J.D. Vance’s comments about protesters confronting ICE officers. Che quipped, “You know, just like these young scholars did on January 6th,” while referencing the attack on the Capitol in 2021. He went on to question the actions of ICE agents, asking if they ever stop to consider if their actions make them appear as “dicks” while pepper-spraying old ladies or shooting at a nurse.
The cold open of the episode targeted former President Donald Trump with a spoof on awards shows, featuring Michael Myers portraying Elon Musk. Musk joked about needing distractions after the actions of ICE agents.
Earlier that day, actress Natalie Portman spoke out against ICE at Variety’s Sundance Studio, wearing pins that read “ICE Out” and “Be Good.” The latter pin was in reference to Renée Good, a woman who was killed by ICE earlier in the month. Portman expressed her concerns about the brutality of ICE and called for an immediate stop to their actions. She also highlighted the unity and support shown by Americans during these challenging times.
Portman stated, “It’s really impossible not to talk about what is happening right now and the brutality of ICE and how it has to stop immediately. But also, there’s a beautiful community that Americans are showing right now. They’re showing up for each other, protecting each other and fighting for their freedom.”
