Eric Dane Drops Out of Awards Gala Due to ‘Physical Realities of ALS’

Eric Dane, known for his role in “Grey’s Anatomy,” was unable to attend an awards gala on Saturday due to complications with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

The ALS Network’s Champions for Cures and Care gala had planned to honor Dane with the Advocate of the Year Award. However, just hours before the event, it was announced that Dane would not be able to attend due to the physical limitations imposed by ALS.

Despite his absence, Dane’s advocacy and commitment to the ALS community were recognized and appreciated by the ALS Network. In a statement to Entertainment Weekly, a representative expressed deep gratitude for Dane’s courage and ongoing support.

In Dane’s place, Broadway star Aaron Lazar accepted the award and shared a pre-recorded message from Dane expressing his gratitude for the honor. In the video, Dane acknowledged the support of his loved ones and all those affected by ALS, including caregivers and advocates.

Dane publicly disclosed his ALS diagnosis to People in April 2025, emphasizing his gratitude for being able to continue working. He mentioned his upcoming return to the set of “Euphoria” and requested privacy for himself and his family during this challenging time.

ALS is a progressive and ultimately fatal disease that affects the nerve cells in the body, leading to muscle weakness and paralysis. Patients with ALS experience difficulty with breathing, speaking, and movement as the condition advances, with no known cure currently available.

Despite the challenges posed by ALS, Eric Dane’s advocacy and courage continue to inspire and support the ALS community. His dedication to raising awareness and pushing for progress in the fight against ALS serves as a beacon of hope for those affected by this devastating disease.
