‘Here to make some money’

Winter Storm Fern brought a flurry of snow to Brooklyn, transforming Prospect Park into a winter wonderland for families eager to embrace the wintry weather. Among the crowd of bundled-up park attendees were two enterprising 13-year-olds, Aaron Rappaport and Ted Driscoll, who decided to pivot from their usual stoop-shoveling business to sell hot chocolate to the sledders.

As the snow continued to fall relentlessly, Aaron and Ted set up their makeshift hot-chocolate stand on a hill that had been turned into a sled run. They enthusiastically called out to passersby, offering the “hottest chocolate in all of Park Slope” for a modest $3 a cup. Despite the challenges of lugging a folding table through the snow and sleet, the young entrepreneurs were determined to make some money while waiting for the snow to slow down.

Families visiting the park for a day of sledding and snow play were quick to warm up to the idea of a steamy cup of hot chocolate. Four-year-old Talia Fackler couldn’t resist the temptation and ran towards the table, while her mom Hannah Fackler inquired if the boys accepted Venmo as payment. The hot chocolate stand quickly became a hit, with many park visitors eager to support the young entrepreneurs.

Sledding was a favorite activity for many families in Prospect Park, with kids and parents alike enjoying the snowy slopes. Tait Foster and his daughter Georgia were racing their sled against fellow dad Artis and his daughter Annabelle, while Park Slope mom Stacey Gomez predicted a snow day for her children who attended private school.

While some kids preferred to stay indoors, others like Marraro’s dog Goose couldn’t resist the lure of the snowy park. Dogs romped happily in the snow, adding to the festive atmosphere. Despite the bone-chilling cold and blustery winds, most parkgoers embraced the winter weather, bundling up in coats and boots for a day of snowy fun.

Amidst the snowy landscape, Adam Perez stood out for his choice of attire – shorts. The software engineer from Crown Heights accompanied by his girlfriend Annie Huryk, braved the cold in hopes of building a snowman. Perez jokingly remarked that he only wears pants for special occasions like weddings, showcasing his unique sense of style even in the midst of a winter storm.

Overall, Prospect Park was a hub of activity and excitement as families came together to enjoy the snowfall and make the most of Winter Storm Fern. The hot chocolate stand run by Aaron and Ted added a touch of warmth and cheer to a cold and snowy day in Brooklyn.
