Amazon slashing some 16,000 jobs in its latest layoff round
Amazon Announces 16,000 Job Cuts Amid Tech Industry Layoffs
Amazon is cutting approximately 16,000 jobs in its latest round of mass layoffs within the tech industry. The announcement was made by Beth Galetti, a senior vice president at the ecommerce giant, in a blog post shared with company employees on Wednesday.
This move comes after Amazon’s previous round of layoffs in October, where 14,000 workers were let go. Galetti addressed concerns about the frequency of these layoffs, stating that it is not the company’s plan to have regular reductions in staff. However, teams will continue to assess their capabilities to innovate and serve customers efficiently.
Galetti explained that while some teams had already implemented organizational changes in October, others have only recently completed this process. Additionally, she emphasized that Amazon will continue to hire and invest in key areas critical to its future growth and success.
Employees based in the U.S. who are affected by the layoffs will have 90 days to seek internal job opportunities before being provided with severance pay, outplacement services, and health insurance benefits. In a related move, Amazon announced the closure of its Fresh grocery and cashierless Go convenience stores as it reevaluates its brick-and-mortar retail strategy.
This situation is evolving, and further updates may be forthcoming. Stay tuned for the latest developments.
