A fireworks store explosion in China kills 8 ahead of Lunar New Year

BEIJING — A tragic incident occurred at a fireworks shop in eastern China, resulting in the loss of eight lives and minor injuries to two individuals just days before the Lunar New Year celebration, authorities have confirmed.

The explosion, which took place on Sunday afternoon in a village in Jiangsu province, was attributed to a resident mishandling fireworks near the store, as reported by the Donghai county government. Further details surrounding the incident were not disclosed.

While setting off firecrackers at midnight on Lunar New Year is a longstanding tradition in China, many regions have implemented bans on fireworks in recent years due to concerns over air quality.

However, some areas have begun to relax these restrictions, potentially allowing for a resurgence of fireworks displays this year.

The upcoming Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is set to commence on Tuesday, marking the beginning of the year of the horse in the Chinese zodiac.

In response to the tragic incident, the Ministry of Emergency Management has called for heightened supervision of the production, transportation, sales, and use of fireworks to prevent similar accidents in the future.

The ministry emphasized the need to strictly prohibit the testing of fireworks near stores and urged local authorities to address any potential safety hazards to ensure a peaceful and joyful Spring Festival for all.
