NYC teens charged in Queensboro bridge TikTok stunt fail
Two teenagers have been arrested and charged in connection with a dangerous TikTok stunt that went terribly wrong, resulting in a 16-year-old boy falling 50 feet and getting trapped inside a shaft on the Queensboro Bridge. The victim’s loved ones accused his friends of abandoning him to die in the shaft.
The NYPD confirmed that a 14-year-old boy and a 15-year-old boy have been charged for their roles in the ill-advised stunt. The younger teen is facing charges of reckless endangerment and criminal trespassing, while the older boy has been charged with criminal trespassing.
The incident took place on Monday evening when the 16-year-old boy from Lynbrook, Long Island, was attempting to film a stunt for TikTok. He fell into the shaft, prompting a 911 call and a massive rescue operation involving approximately 75 first responders and 10 pieces of apparatus.
The boy was eventually rescued and taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital, Weill Cornell, where he remains in critical but stable condition. A petition has been circulating online, demanding an investigation into the incident and alleging that the victim’s friends filmed him as he screamed for help and then left him trapped in the shaft.
The petition claims that the friends took the injured teen’s phone to prevent him from calling for help and fled the scene, leaving him to suffer alone. It wasn’t until hours later that someone who saw the video contacted authorities, leading to the boy’s rescue.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help cover the victim’s recovery costs, as he suffered hypothermia and significant blood loss during the fall. The fundraiser describes his survival as a miracle and notes that he will require extensive surgeries, recovery, and rehabilitation.
The incident has once again raised concerns about the dangers of social media platforms like TikTok, where risky stunts are often shared and glorified. This case serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of seeking validation and attention through dangerous actions on social media.
