Trans Minnesota Dem Leigh Finke argues ‘queer’ kids need access to porn sites for ‘educational’ reasons
State Rep. Leigh Finke of Minnesota has stirred controversy with her recent comments during a committee meeting regarding age limits on porn websites. The two-term Democrat, who identifies as a woman and transitioned in 2017, argued against a proposal that would require age verification for accessing adult content online. She claimed that such laws could be used to block queer kids from accessing pornographic material that could be educational for them.
During the meeting, Finke suggested that attorneys general in states with age-verification laws are eager to use these laws to prevent LGBTQ+ youth from accessing content that could help educate them about their sexuality and community. She raised concerns about the lack of sex education for queer kids and emphasized the importance of providing them with resources that reflect their identities.
The lawmaker’s remarks sparked outrage online, with conservative parents’ group Moms of Liberty sharing a clip of her comments on social media. Critics slammed Finke for advocating for minors to have access to adult content and accused her of grooming children. Some called for her removal from office, labeling her as a child predator.
Despite the backlash, Finke remains steadfast in her position. As Minnesota’s first transgender elected official, she is up for reelection in November. The debate surrounding age limits on porn websites continues to be a contentious issue, with advocates on both sides arguing for the protection of children and the rights of LGBTQ+ individuals to access educational resources.
