North Korea warns of destroying South if threatened, leaves door open for US dialogue
SEOUL, South Korea — SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has issued a warning, stating that his country has the capability to “completely destroy” South Korea if its security is threatened. Despite this strong stance towards Seoul, Kim Jong Un has expressed a willingness to engage in dialogue with Washington. This statement was made as he wrapped up a ruling party congress where he outlined his policy objectives for the next five years.
State media reports have revealed that Kim Jong Un also emphasized the need to enhance North Korea’s military capabilities by developing new weapons systems. These include the advancement of intercontinental ballistic missiles that can be deployed from underwater, as well as expanding the arsenal of tactical nuclear weapons, such as artillery and short-range missiles, with a focus on targeting South Korea.
Kim Jong Un highlighted the rapid progress of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs, declaring that it has solidified the country’s status as a nuclear-armed state. He called on the United States to abandon what he views as “hostile” policies towards North Korea as a prerequisite for restarting stalled diplomatic talks.
