California A.G. Rob Bonta Promises ‘Vigorous’ Paramount-WBD Review
California Attorney General Promises Vigorous Review of Paramount Skydance’s Acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery
Rob Bonta, California’s Attorney General, has issued a warning to Paramount Skydance and Warner Bros. Discovery, emphasizing the need for a thorough regulatory review before celebrating their acquisition deal. In a statement released on Thursday, Bonta stated that the deal is not finalized and that the California Department of Justice is conducting an open investigation.
After a day of dramatic developments that led to Paramount Skydance’s bid being accepted by WBD, Bonta reiterated his commitment to scrutinize the merger. Netflix, which initially had a sale agreement with WBD, backed out due to the increasing price tag, paving the way for Paramount Skydance to move forward with the acquisition.
Concerns have been raised about the consolidation of a major Hollywood studio with a leading streaming platform, prompting Bonta to take a closer look at the potential impact on the industry. The political landscape surrounding big business, particularly in the entertainment sector, has been further heightened by President Trump’s criticisms of mainstream media outlets.
Prior to Netflix’s withdrawal from the deal, a group of 11 state attorneys general, all Republicans, urged the Department of Justice to carefully evaluate the implications of the merger. They voiced concerns about market concentration, competition, pricing, and innovation, highlighting potential negative consequences for consumers and the theater industry.
The attorneys general from Alabama, Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, and West Virginia collectively expressed apprehensions about Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Bros., cautioning against the detrimental effects on the movie industry’s global dominance.
