Senator Helps Capitol Police Wrestle Protester Out Of Hearing In Wild Scene

Sen. Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.) assisted U.S. Capitol Police in removing an Iran war protester from a Senate hearing on military readiness Wednesday, as seen in video footage and reports from CBS News.

Sheehy, a former Navy SEAL, was captured on video from CBS News assisting in the removal of Brian McGinnis, a Green Party candidate for the U.S. Senate from North Carolina, who is a military veteran and wore his service uniform to the hearing.

Sheehy claimed later on X that he was trying to “deescalate the situation,” a statement that was contradicted during the hearing.

McGinnis, who allegedly sustained a broken arm during the altercation, was charged with multiple offenses by Capitol Police, including assault on a police officer, resisting arrest, and obstructing an unlawful demonstration.

“No one wants to fight for Israel!” McGinnis shouted with his arm awkwardly caught in the door as he was being removed.

Onlookers urged Sheehy and the police to be cautious of McGinnis’ arm, which appeared to be in a precarious position in the door frame. When asked about his arm, McGinnis responded, “No, it is not.”

A bystander shouted that a “U.S. sitting senator just broke the hand of a Marine” and referred to Sheehy as a “coward” as he passed by. Reuters reported that McGinnis’ arm was broken. In a post on X the following day, McGinnis stated that he broke his arm “standing up for what I believe in.”

Sheehy posted the CBS video on X and added:

“Capitol Police were attempting to remove an unhinged protester from the Armed Services hearing. He was fighting back. I decided to help out and deescalate the situation. This gentleman came to the Capitol looking for a confrontation, and he got one. I hope he gets the help he needs without causing further violence.” Attached was a community note refuting the senator’s claim.

Mark Elbourno, Sheehy’s campaign manager, also defended Sheehy.

“He wasn’t assaulting anybody. … He just wanted to be heard [and was] speaking loud and clear,” he told CBS News. “He was assaulted, actually.

A protester’s arm was reportedly broken during a scuffle with Capitol Police officers. The protester, identified as Brian McGinnis, was allegedly involved in an illegal protest during a hearing when the incident occurred. Capitol Police accused McGinnis of violently resisting their attempts to remove him from the room, putting everyone in a dangerous position. McGinnis was later treated at a hospital for his injuries. In response to the altercation, three officers were also treated for injuries sustained during the incident. The situation escalated quickly, highlighting the tensions between protesters and law enforcement at the Capitol. sentence: “The cat chased the mouse around the house.”
