Man who carjacked woman while on bail for gun case walks free after guilty plea
A Man Accused of Carjacking Escapes Prison Time Despite Guilty Plea
A man accused of carjacking a woman while awaiting trial for being a felon in possession of a firearm will not serve any time in an Illinois prison after pleading guilty in both cases, according to court records.
Josiah Noyola, 37, found himself in legal trouble when he was released pending trial on May 30, 2021, for the gun possession charge. As the case progressed through the slow Cook County court system, Noyola got involved in a violent carjacking more than two years later.
Reportedly, Noyola and his accomplices targeted a woman in the early hours of July 25, 2023, in Chicago. The group assaulted the woman, took her car keys, vehicle, and phone before fleeing the scene. Prosecutors highlighted in a detention petition that Noyola identified himself as a member of the gang Satan’s Disciples.
Last week, Noyola admitted guilt to aggravated robbery for the carjacking and being a felon in possession of a firearm from the 2021 case. Judge Kenneth Wadas sentenced him to four years in prison for each count.
Surprisingly, Judge Kenneth Wadas decided that the sentences for both charges would run concurrently, meaning Noyola would serve them simultaneously, despite the carjacking occurring during the gun possession trial.
Due to legal calculations, Noyola’s four-year sentence was reduced to two years, and with credit for the 848 days spent in pre-trial detention, he had already completed his required time. Records from the Illinois Department of Corrections indicate that he was transferred to state custody for intake processing last Thursday and released the same day.
