Logan Square man guilty of murdering girlfriend, hiding body in duffel bag
A Logan Square man has been found guilty of murder after a jury convicted him for the brutal killing of his girlfriend, Brittany Battaglia. Genesis Silva, 36, will remain in custody as post-trial motions are processed before sentencing by Judge Mary Brosnahan.
The tragic events unfolded in June 2023, when Battaglia’s body was discovered nearly decapitated and stuffed inside a duffel bag in Silva’s bedroom during a police well-being check.
During the trial, Silva’s defense claimed that he hid Battaglia’s body out of fear that he would be wrongly accused of her death, denying any involvement in her murder.
The investigation began when Battaglia’s roommate reported her missing after she failed to return from a visit to Silva’s residence. Chicago police detectives, acting on a tip from a concerned friend of Silva, located Battaglia’s body in his home on North Kimball Avenue.
Prosecutors revealed that Battaglia had sustained multiple sharp force wounds, leading to her tragic death. Silva was found in possession of a machete, with further evidence of blood found on the weapon and the duffel bag containing Battaglia’s remains.
Additional incriminating evidence was discovered in Silva’s kitchen, including cleaning supplies, chemicals, and a note inquiring about the smell. Silva’s troubled past, including a prior charge of attempted murder and sexual assault, came to light during the trial.
Silva’s ex-wife, who had previously been a victim of his violence, described him as harboring a deep hatred towards women, drawing parallels to the character in “American Psycho.”
Despite attempts to portray Silva in a positive light as a successful entrepreneur and community advocate, prosecutors painted a darker picture of a man with a history of violence towards women.
Silva and Battaglia had been in a relationship since 2022, with charges against Silva escalating from concealing Battaglia’s death to directly causing her demise.
