Mexico City sets the world record for the largest soccer class

Mexico City Breaks World Record for Largest Soccer Class with 9,500 Participants

MEXICO CITY — Mexico City made history on Sunday by setting a new world record for the largest soccer class ever held, with a staggering 9,500 participants gathering in the heart of the capital’s Zocalo square. The event served as a prelude to Mexico’s upcoming role as host of the opening match of the World Cup in June.

The iconic Zocalo square transformed into a massive outdoor training ground, where enthusiastic crowds engaged in soccer drills led by experienced instructors. From kicking balls to executing coordinated exercises, the participants embraced the spirit of sport and community involvement.

Guinness World Records adjudicator, Alfredo Arista Rueda, officially recognized the achievement during the event.

“You are officially amazing. Officially Amazing! Congratulations!,” he exclaimed, eliciting cheers and a shower of confetti from the jubilant crowd.

According to organizers, the turnout surpassed the previous Guinness record set in Seattle back in June 2025, which had seen 1,038 participants come together for a similar soccer class.

Attendees expressed their excitement, noting that the record-breaking event further energized anticipation for the upcoming World Cup.

“The Azteca Stadium has witnessed legends like Pelé and Maradona; the magic of a World Cup on home soil is unparalleled,” remarked soccer coach Mario Alberto Álvarez Acosta.

Mexico has a rich history with the World Cup, having previously hosted the tournament in 1970 and 1996, with Brazil and Argentina clinching victory on those occasions.

Among the participants, Sandra López Figueroa, a housewife, shared her delight at the experience.

“I had a blast; I pushed myself beyond my limits and discovered new abilities,” she enthused.
