New way burglars are targeting California millionaire homeowners

A wave of home invasions has put the affluent neighborhood of Sharon Heights in Menlo Park, California, on high alert. Known as one of Silicon Valley’s most prestigious residential areas, Sharon Heights has been experiencing a troubling increase in burglaries where families are present in their homes during the break-ins.

According to resident Brian Kissel, historically, most break-ins occurred when residents were away. However, recent incidents have seen burglars targeting homes while families are inside, causing heightened concern among the community. In the past three months alone, there have been 13 reported burglaries in the upscale neighborhood, signaling an ongoing issue that residents are grappling with.

Nicole Acker, a spokesperson for the Menlo Park Police Department, mentioned that the recent activity mirrors trends seen across the entire Bay Area and extends to similar communities statewide. Law enforcement officials are actively working on burglary-suppression operations and collaborating with multiple agencies to address the regional crews involved in the crimes.

The burglars have been entering homes during dinnertime through the sides of residences, using a small device that can shatter a window in a matter of seconds. Martha Sewald, a long-time resident of Sharon Heights, highlighted that valuable items like jewelry and designer handbags are taken within minutes of the break-ins.

Although only one person connected to the string of burglaries has been charged so far, local authorities and city council members are making the incidents a top priority. Ray Mueller, the San Mateo County District 3 supervisor for Menlo Park, emphasized the need for community support in enhancing enforcement and prevention efforts. Residents are urged to come forward and show their support for initiatives like the use of drones to improve safety measures.

Brian Kissel also stressed the importance of a multifaceted approach to address the issue, combining technology, community collaboration, and education on home security measures. By working together and implementing various strategies, residents hope to create a safer environment for everyone in Sharon Heights.

As the neighborhood remains vigilant against these brazen home invasions, it is crucial for residents to stay informed and take necessary precautions to protect their homes and families. Collaboration between law enforcement, local officials, and the community will be key in addressing the ongoing challenges and ensuring the safety and security of Sharon Heights residents.
