Man arrested after climbing into pygmy hippo Moo Deng’s enclosure at Thai zoo
BANGKOK — Authorities have apprehended a man for trespassing into the enclosure of Moo Deng, the beloved pygmy hippo who captured the hearts of many on social media, according to zoo officials.
The individual allegedly entered the enclosure on a quiet evening without the presence of a keeper or other visitors, as reported by the Director of the Khao Kheow Open Zoo, Narongwit Chodchoy.
Security footage circulating online shows the man, dressed in a distinctive outfit, approaching Moo Deng and her mother Jona with a tablet in hand, potentially capturing photos or videos.
The man lingered inside the enclosure briefly before being noticed by staff, who promptly contacted the authorities. The individual remained cooperative until police arrived.
Moo Deng rose to fame shortly after her birth in 2024, gaining a large following both locally and internationally. Visitors flock to see her in person and capture her adorable moments on camera.
The man has been charged with trespassing, and the zoo plans to pursue further legal action. While the suspect has been released on bail, both Moo Deng and Jona are unharmed.
In a statement on the zoo’s Facebook page, it was mentioned that the animals appeared slightly startled by the incident and will be closely monitored by a veterinarian.
Visitors are reminded to adhere to all rules and guidelines provided by staff for their safety and the well-being of the wildlife at the Khao Kheow Open Zoo.
Located approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Bangkok, the Khao Kheow Open Zoo spans 800 hectares and houses over 2,000 animals.
