Possible improvised explosive device found at MacDill Air Force Base Monday: Sources

A suspicious package was discovered outside the MacDill Air Force Base visitor center in Florida on Monday, which was believed to contain an improvised explosive device, according to sources from ABC News. The FBI is currently analyzing the package to determine the exact nature of its contents and whether it would have been functional.

Following the discovery of the suspicious package, the threat level at the base was raised to FPCON Charlie on Tuesday night. FPCON Charlie is the second-highest level of Force Protection, indicating a serious threat and heightened security measures around the base. Additionally, a shelter-in-place order was issued on Wednesday afternoon after a threat was made against the base. Base officials emphasized that all threats are taken seriously, and the safety and security of the installation are top priorities.

The shelter-in-place order was lifted a few hours later, but the investigation into the suspicious package is ongoing. MacDill Air Force Base plays a crucial role as a command hub for the Pentagon, hosting U.S. Central Command and Special Operations Command. The base is responsible for directing military operations in the Middle East and supporting Special Operations forces.

Last week, tragedy struck when six airmen died in a military refueling plane crash in Iraq, three of whom were stationed at MacDill Air Force Base. The base continues to mourn the loss of these brave servicemen and remains vigilant in ensuring the safety of its personnel.
