Woman robbed 89-year-old man at Division Blue Line, accomplice sought
A robbery incident on the Blue Line in Chicago has led to the arrest of a 38-year-old woman named Laura Garcia. Garcia is accused of working with an unidentified male accomplice to rob an 89-year-old man on the train last month. Despite Garcia being ordered detained by Judge Robert Kuzas following her court appearance, her accomplice remains at large.
According to prosecutors, Garcia and her male accomplice were soliciting money from passengers on the Blue Line on February 14, claiming it was the accomplice’s birthday. The duo targeted the elderly victim, with Garcia sitting across from him while the accomplice sat behind him. When the victim got off at the Division stop, the accomplice demanded money from him and forcibly took his wallet. The victim fought back by striking the accomplice with his cane before the duo fled the scene.
After the robbery, Garcia and her partner regrouped on the platform, where the accomplice handed the stolen wallet to Garcia for inspection before leaving on foot. Detectives were able to identify Garcia from CTA surveillance footage and internal police messages. The victim also positively identified Garcia in a photo lineup.
Garcia was apprehended by CPD officers in the Loop after they recognized her from a bulletin. At the time of her arrest, she had two outstanding warrants and a history of numerous misdemeanor cases since 2006. Her felony convictions include DUI, aggravated battery, narcotics possession, and theft-related charges.
While Garcia is facing robbery charges, her male accomplice has yet to be identified or charged in connection with the incident. The investigation into the robbery continues as authorities work to bring the accomplice to justice.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant while using public transportation and being aware of one’s surroundings. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the public played a crucial role in apprehending the suspect and seeking justice for the victim.
