Deadly LaGuardia Airport crash was avoidable, expert says

The tragic plane crash at LaGuardia Airport has raised serious questions about the coordination and communication among air traffic control entities. Former inspector general of the Department of Transportation, Mary Schiavo, pointed out that the crash was an avoidable “clear error” likely caused by the Federal Aviation Administration not fulfilling their duties.

Schiavo explained that there should have been coordination between the control tower and ground control, but it appears there was confusion or a critical mistake made in allowing a firetruck to cross the runway when an aircraft had been cleared to land. This miscommunication led to the Air Canada plane colliding with the firetruck, resulting in the deaths of two pilots and injuries to dozens of individuals.

The regional jet from Montreal, operated by Jazz Aviation, crashed into the firetruck on Runway 4 at LaGuardia Airport while the truck was responding to another incident. The crash remains under investigation, but Schiavo compared it to a previous incident involving American Airlines and a military helicopter, which she attributed to a “dereliction of duty” by the FAA.

Schiavo expressed concerns that the FAA may have failed to coordinate staffing properly in this case, leading to another tragic incident. She emphasized the importance of air traffic control coordination to prevent such accidents in the future.

The air traffic control tower audio recordings captured the chaotic scene during the crash, with controllers admitting to making mistakes. Despite the crash, a female flight attendant miraculously survived after being ejected through the front of the aircraft while still in her seat. She was rescued by Port Authority cops and taken to the hospital for treatment.

The aftermath of the crash revealed the mangled cockpit of the plane on the runway, highlighting the severity of the impact. The investigation into the crash continues as authorities work to determine the exact cause of the tragedy and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
