U.S. Postal Service Employee Orchestrates $364,000 Bank Fraud Scheme: U.S. Department of Justice
US Postal Service Employee Sentenced for Bank Fraud Scheme
An employee of the United States Postal Service has been convicted of using his position to facilitate a bank fraud scheme, as reported by the Department of Justice (DOJ).
Andre Whitehurst, a resident of North Carolina, admitted to misusing his role as a postal clerk to steal checks from incoming and outgoing mail. These stolen checks were then sold to accomplices who deposited them into fictitious accounts and withdrew the funds before the banks could detect the fraudulent activity.
The scheme resulted in over $364,000 in attempted losses before Whitehurst was caught. In June 2025, he pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and theft of mail by a postal employee.
Whitehurst has since been sentenced to 15 months in prison and one year of supervised release. Additionally, he has agreed to forfeit $74,000 and is responsible for making restitution to the victims of his crimes. His co-conspirators have also pleaded guilty and are awaiting sentencing.
This case sheds light on the prevalence of check fraud, despite a decline in the use of checks. The Federal Reserve Bank of Boston has noted a sharp decrease in the number of checks processed annually over the past few decades. However, fraud related to stolen and altered checks has been on the rise, fueled by vulnerabilities in the mail system.
Criminals often target mailboxes or collection boxes to steal checks, which they then alter using various chemicals. By exploiting delays in bank processing, they are able to withdraw funds before the fraudulent activity is detected.
As incidents of check fraud continue to increase, it is essential for individuals to remain vigilant and take steps to protect their financial information.
