Mets World Series legend Mookie Wilson serves fans at Citi Field

Mets fans were in for a treat at the team’s home opener as legendary player Mookie Wilson surprised them by serving up lunch between innings. Wilson, a hero from the 1986 World Series, was celebrating the opening of the first Legacy Catering outpost at Citi Field, a venture he started with his family in 2022.

The 70-year-old Wilson, who coached the team from 1996 to 2002, was seen dishing out pulled pork sandwiches and mac and cheese alongside his brothers at the new Legacy Catering booth. The Wilson brothers, who all have a background in professional baseball, had previously catered at training season events and Mets block parties, but this marked their first permanent location at the stadium.

For Wilson, the opportunity to combine his love for baseball and cooking felt like a full-circle moment. He never imagined serving meals at a ballpark when he was playing, but now sees it as a natural progression. Wilson emphasized that retirement is overrated and expressed his excitement for this new chapter in the restaurant business.

Despite the initial fear of the unpredictable number of orders, Wilson was determined not to let it dictate his decisions. Fans flocked to the Legacy Catering booth, especially during the fifth inning when Wilson joined his brothers. Many fans, like Todd Silverstein and Vincent Milillo, were thrilled to meet the Mets legend and support his business.

Vincent Milillo, who was served by Wilson himself, described the experience as “pretty cool,” highlighting Wilson’s status as a legend in Mets history. Another fan, Matthew Gamsey, expressed gratitude for the chance to meet Wilson, reminiscing about the memories the player had created during his time on the field.

Overall, the Legacy Catering booth at Citi Field has become a fan-favorite spot, attracting fans not only for the delicious food but also for the chance to interact with a Mets icon. Wilson’s transition from the baseball field to the restaurant business has been well-received by fans, who continue to show their support for the Wilson family’s love of cooking and baseball.
