Afghanistan accuses Pakistan of shelling outskirts of eastern city, killing and wounding civilians

KABUL, Afghanistan — The government of Afghanistan has accused the military of Pakistan of carrying out an attack on the outskirts of an eastern Afghan city, resulting in the death of one person and injuring more than a dozen individuals. This incident marks the latest escalation in the ongoing conflict between the two neighboring countries.

The conflict, which intensified in late February, represents the most severe confrontation between Afghanistan and Pakistan in recent history. The root of the conflict lies in Pakistan’s allegations that Afghanistan harbors militants responsible for attacks within Pakistan, particularly the Pakistani Taliban. Despite the Afghan government’s denial of these claims, tensions continue to escalate.

Deputy government spokesman Hamdullah Fitrat reported that the attack on the city of Asadabad in Kunar Province involved the use of mortars and heavy weaponry, targeting rural areas and civilian homes. The aftermath of the attack resulted in one fatality and 16 injuries, predominantly among women and children. Pakistan has yet to respond to these allegations.

The conflict between Afghanistan and Pakistan has witnessed numerous cross-border clashes and airstrikes, including incidents in the capital city of Kabul. Recent events have sparked international concern, especially given the presence of other militant groups in the region, such as al-Qaida and the Islamic State group.

Efforts to establish a lasting peace between the two countries have faced significant challenges, with previous peace talks failing to yield a resolution. The recent escalation of hostilities underscores the need for a sustainable peace agreement to prevent further loss of civilian lives and destabilization in the region.
