Air Canada CEO steps down amid backlash over apology video after LaGuardia plane crash

Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau Announces Retirement Following Backlash

After facing intense criticism for delivering a video statement predominantly in English following a fatal plane crash, Air Canada CEO Michael Rousseau has decided to step down. Rousseau, who took on the role of CEO in 2021 after nearly two decades in various leadership positions at the airline, has informed the board of his retirement by the end of the third quarter of 2026, as confirmed by Air Canada in a statement released on Monday.

While Air Canada stated that Rousseau’s retirement is in line with the CEO succession planning, the timing of his departure has raised questions amidst the recent controversy. The decision comes on the heels of widespread outrage in Quebec, where the majority of residents speak French, and Rousseau’s failure to address them in their official language triggered a wave of backlash.

In a video addressing the crash at LaGuardia Airport, Rousseau’s minimal use of French sparked criticism, leading to a motion in the provincial legislature calling for his resignation. The incident further exacerbated Air Canada’s public relations crisis following the tragic accident that claimed the lives of both pilots and left several passengers injured.

As Canada’s national airline operating from Montreal, where French is the predominant language, Air Canada is subject to the Official Languages Act, mandating services in both English and French. Rousseau acknowledged his shortcomings in French proficiency and expressed regret for diverting attention from the crash victims and Air Canada employees involved.

Rousseau’s retirement announcement also highlighted his previous language-related controversies, including a speech in English to Montreal business leaders and a subsequent apology for his remarks. Despite efforts to improve his French skills, Rousseau’s tenure as CEO has been marred by linguistic challenges that have now culminated in his decision to step down later this year.

The fatal collision at LaGuardia Airport on March 22, resulting in the loss of both pilots and injuries to numerous passengers, remains a tragic event that has deeply impacted Air Canada and the aviation industry as a whole. The aftermath of the crash has underscored the importance of effective communication, cultural sensitivity, and language inclusivity in crisis management and corporate leadership.
