Skilled Foreign Workers Think About Leaving the U.S.
A group of highly skilled and educated foreign workers share their challenges of building a career in the United States. These individuals are required to obtain an H-1B visa through a lottery system to work in industries such as technology and medicine for up to six years. However, recent changes made by the Trump administration have made it more difficult for companies to sponsor these visas, leading some foreigners to reconsider their career plans.
One such individual is Wen-Hsing Huang from Taiwan, who came to the U.S. in 2022 to work in the tech industry. Despite facing uncertainties, he believes in using his talents to make a difference in the world. Ananya Joshi from India pursued a master’s program in Chicago in 2022 to fulfill her father’s dream. Haina, a Chinese national, fell in love with the U.S. while studying in New York and obtained her H-1B visa in 2022.
However, as companies are becoming more reluctant to sponsor H-1B visas, these individuals are finding it challenging to secure job opportunities. Even with a high salary, Huang felt anxious due to tech layoffs and immigration policy changes. Despite the hurdles, Haina remains determined to find a job in the U.S. until she is forced to leave the country.
In the end, Joshi decided to leave the U.S. and accepted a job in Germany, while Huang returned to Taiwan to start his own company. These individuals are proof that the American dream can be pursued outside of the United States, showcasing resilience and determination in the face of adversity.
