Bronx man, 76, shoots neighbor 55 years his junior to death over long-time beef: cops
A tragic incident unfolded in the Bronx when a 76-year-old man, Gilbert Smalls, shot and killed his 21-year-old neighbor, Justin Chatfield, following a longstanding feud between the two individuals. The altercation, which had been ongoing for approximately five years, culminated in a fatal confrontation that resulted in Chatfield’s untimely death.
The confrontation took place at 30 Richman Plaza, where police responded to a 911 call and found Chatfield with a gunshot wound to the torso. Despite efforts by emergency medical services to rush him to St. Barnabas Hospital, Chatfield succumbed to his injuries.
According to sources, the tension between Smalls and Chatfield escalated on the fateful night when Chatfield knocked on Smalls’ door only to be met with a fatal gunshot when Smalls opened the door.
Both men had a history of involvement with law enforcement, with Smalls having at least two prior arrests, the most recent being over 25 years ago for assault. Chatfield, on the other hand, had three recent priors and was wanted in connection to robberies at the time of his death.
The tragic incident sheds light on the consequences of unresolved disputes and the potential for violence when conflicts are not addressed or resolved. It serves as a stark reminder of the importance of communication, conflict resolution, and seeking help when interpersonal tensions escalate to dangerous levels.
The community mourns the loss of Justin Chatfield, a young life cut short by senseless violence, while Gilbert Smalls faces the consequences of his actions as law enforcement investigates the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
