‘Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord’ Review: Uneven but Promising

Return of “Star Wars” to Theaters with “The Mandalorian and Grogu”

After a seven-year absence, the iconic “Star Wars” franchise is set to make a comeback next month with Jon Favreau’s “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” a feature spinoff of the popular Disney+ series “The Mandalorian.” This premiere marks a significant shift in the galaxy far, far away, as the focus has moved from the big screen to our living rooms since 2019. While anticipated film projects have not materialized, Disney+ has continued to expand its roster with a variety of shows ranging from transcendent to entertaining.

One interesting outcome of this shift is the newfound importance of the animated series “Clone Wars” in the “Star Wars” canon. Starting with Genndy Tartakovsky’s series in 2003 and continuing with a final season on Disney+ in 2020, “Clone Wars” has become a crucial bridge between the animated world and the live-action realm, with characters like Ahsoka Tano making the leap from animation to live-action.

The latest addition to the “Star Wars” universe is the series “Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord,” which showcases the character Maul portrayed by Sam Witwer. With a star-studded cast and creative team led by Dave Filoni, “Shadow Lord” blurs the lines between tentpole and side quest, exploring Maul’s role as a crime baron in the early days of the Galactic Empire.

While “Shadow Lord” may require some prior knowledge of the “Star Wars” universe to fully appreciate certain moments, it still delivers on classic themes of revenge, temptation, and the battle between light and dark. The series’ visual style is a mixed bag, with stunning cityscapes and lightsaber battles contrasted by occasionally blocky character design.

Overall, “Star Wars: Maul — Shadow Lord” offers an intriguing new chapter in the saga, blending familiar elements with fresh storytelling. The first two episodes are now available on Disney+, with new episodes airing weekly.
