ICE arrests ‘sicko’ illegal migrant accused of kidnapping 4-year-old girl from Long Island laundromat
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has once again apprehended an illegal immigrant who was accused of kidnapping a 4-year-old girl from a Long Island laundromat last month. This incident occurred after a local judge had released the suspect back into the community.
Carlos Corte-Corte, a 38-year-old illegal immigrant from Ecuador, was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on March 31 and placed in removal proceedings. The alleged kidnapping took place at the Laundry Kingdom in Patchogue, where Corte-Corte reportedly led the young girl out the back of the establishment while her mother was present. Fortunately, Suffolk County Police were able to locate the child at a nearby library.
Following his arrest, Corte-Corte was charged with second-degree kidnapping, endangering the welfare of a child, and for an outstanding warrant. Despite these serious charges, a local judge decided to release him on supervised release without bond. This decision was met with outrage from DHS, who criticized the release of a repeat offender back into the community.
According to DHS, Corte-Corte had illegally entered the country on three separate occasions in 2020 and was deported each time. However, he managed to re-enter the US illegally a fourth time before the alleged kidnapping incident took place. Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis condemned the actions of “sanctuary politicians” who prioritize politics over public safety by releasing dangerous individuals like Corte-Corte.
After being released from jail, Corte-Corte was placed on supervised release with a GPS monitor. Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney expressed his disagreement with the judge’s decision to release the suspect, emphasizing the concerning nature of the case.
Corte-Corte’s public defender argued that the kidnapping was a result of miscommunication, claiming that the suspect believed the girl lived alone without parents. The defense attorney stated that Corte-Corte took the child to the library and informed an employee about the situation, but a language barrier may have contributed to the misunderstanding.
Overall, the re-arrest of Carlos Corte-Corte highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in dealing with repeat offenders and the importance of prioritizing public safety over political considerations. The swift action taken by ICE to apprehend the suspect underscores the need for cooperation between federal and local authorities to ensure the safety of communities.
