Delta hikes bag check fee by up to $50 as jet fuel prices soar
Delta Air Lines has announced an increase in its bag-check fees, following the lead of other U.S. carriers in response to rising jet fuel costs due to the Iran conflict. The airline stated that the hike in fees for checking bags is a result of “evolving global conditions and industry dynamics,” with the new rates taking effect starting Wednesday.
According to Delta, the fees for travelers’ first and second checked bags will increase by $10, while checking a third piece of luggage on domestic and short-haul international flights will cost $50. This adjustment in the fee structure is part of Delta’s continuous review of pricing strategies across its business. It is worth noting that this is the first time in two years that Delta has raised fees for checking bags domestically.
The new rates for checking bags on Delta flights are as follows:
– First bag: $45
– Second bag: $55
– Third bag: $200
However, Delta SkyMiles Medallion club members, first-class passengers, and other eligible customers will still be able to check bags for free. Additionally, checked-bag rates for long-haul international flights will remain unchanged.
Delta’s decision to increase bag-check fees follows similar moves by United and JetBlue, who also raised their fees after the U.S. and Israel’s military actions in Iran on February 28. The price of jet fuel has surged to $209 a barrel for the week ending April 3, marking a 132% increase from last year’s average, according to the International Air Transport Association.
To offset the impact of higher fuel costs, airlines have been raising airfares and adding fuel surcharges to ticket prices. Travel experts recommend that travelers consider purchasing refundable fares for upcoming trips now, as prices may continue to rise in the future.
In conclusion, Delta’s decision to hike bag-check fees is a response to the current economic climate in the aviation industry. Passengers are advised to stay informed about any changes in fees and prices when planning their travels.
