Patient who stabbed Provident Hospital doctor with kitchen knife gets 4 year sentence

A shocking incident at Provident Hospital in Chicago has left many questioning the justice system’s handling of violent crimes. Nathaniel Price, a 36-year-old man, received a four-year sentence for stabbing an emergency room doctor, but is expected to spend less than three months in prison.

Price pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon in front of Judge Sophia Atcherson. The attack occurred when doctors at Provident Hospital were treating Price for an infection. Price followed them into a nearby office area with a stainless steel kitchen knife, stabbing one doctor in the chest and thigh. The 56-year-old doctor was hospitalized in fair condition, while a second doctor, aged 32, suffered bruising on the chest during the confrontation.

Following the attack, Price was taken to another hospital for a mental health evaluation and was subsequently released. Despite being confined for approximately 400 days, Price accumulated 647 days of credit toward his sentence while in jail. This, combined with the state’s standard 50% sentence reduction, leaves Price with only 83 days to serve in actual prison.

The leniency of Price’s sentence has sparked outrage and raised concerns about the effectiveness of the justice system in addressing violent crimes. Many are questioning how a violent offender like Price could potentially spend less than three months behind bars for such a heinous act.

This case highlights the need for reform in the criminal justice system to ensure that offenders are held accountable for their actions and that victims receive the justice they deserve. It also underscores the importance of providing proper support and resources for mental health issues to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

As the community grapples with the implications of this case, it is essential to continue advocating for a fair and just system that prioritizes the safety and well-being of its citizens. Only through meaningful change and reform can we hope to prevent such tragic incidents from happening again in the future.
