Detroit offering significant cash incentives to attract newcomers and spark growth in city
A coalition in Detroit has launched a program called “Make Detroit Home” that offers cash incentives of up to $15,000 to attract and retain residents in the city. The initiative aims to stimulate economic growth by providing benefits totaling over $500,000 to more than 300 participants, including entrepreneurs, creatives, small business owners, and individuals willing to relocate to Detroit.
The program offers stipends of up to $15,000 to assist with home down payments, renovations, rent, or business expenses. Additionally, eligible applicants may qualify for $1,000 grants to cover moving costs, security deposits, or other expenses like gym memberships or meal services.
According to Realtor.com, Detroit’s affordability makes the $15,000 incentive a significant opportunity for residents, as it can cover substantial expenses such as down payments or renovations. This purchasing power, combined with the city’s momentum, could encourage household formation and contribute to long-term market stability.
The “Make Detroit Home” initiative is the first major project by the MoveDetroit coalition, a nonprofit supported by local organizations and the mayor’s office.
Billionaire businessman Dan Gilbert, founder of Rocket Mortgage, serves as the honorary chair of the coalition. Gilbert emphasized the importance of retaining talented individuals in Detroit, highlighting the city’s appeal with major employers like Google and Fifth Third Bank.
The “Make Detroit Home” initiative is privately funded, with MoveDetroit aiming to raise $10 million this year. Gilbert has pledged to match every dollar raised, further solidifying Detroit’s position as a city of growth, opportunity, and resilience.
